How accurate are the calorie estimates?

  • Do the calorie estimates for each workout take into account your age, gender and weight? Or are they just averages for a wide range of people? The "calories burned" estimates seem to be consistently much too high. I was curious as to how they come up with these numbers.

I use my heart rate monitor (which is more accurate) to track the calories I burn. On the more intense videos (Inferno, HR training, etc.) I tend to burn about 2/3 of what the estimate says--sometimes more, sometimes less. Obviously it depends on how hard you push yourself, how many reps you do, etc. Hope that helps!

Thanks for reaching out! The estimated calories for exercise are rough estimates. It takes into account your gender, age (if given), and then uses an algorithm that was derived based on the statistics of average men and women using a 'medium' intensity.
