I Lost 5 Lbs! I Burned 5,000 Calories! I Lost 10 Lbs!

I’m just curious. My university gym offers a few options: 1 session for $35, 4 for $132, 8 for $248, 12 for $348, and 20 for $520. You can also sign up for a big 12-week program with 3 30-minute sessions a week and some other consultations for $460. (Why you’d get the 20 for $520 when you can get the 12-week program with 36 sessions for $60 less is beyond me.)

Anyway, just wondering what other places charge. I think my gym has a decent deal considering my membership is included in my tuition.

The gym I checked out tonight had the following rates:
1-hour: 1-5 sessions, $55 each – 6-11 sessions, $50 each – 12+ sessions, $46 each
Half-hour: 1-5, $40 – 6-11, $37 – 12+, $35

Plus the have tandem and small group training. I’m not sure how this rate compares – I’m still gather and touring all the local gyms before making a decision. This one was pretty nice with the option of monthly or yearly membership. $59 a month either way but doing a 1 year gets you free initiation.

My gym seems to be 75-80 per session depending on the package you get and your payment program.

They seem to come in 36 / 24 / 16 session packages with payment options being 12 months or 18 months.

I’m debating if I want to do the 16 session over 18 month payments and it works out to be $75/month. But, also a bit thrown off by the idea that by time I’ve done the 16 sessions – I’ll still be paying $75/month for awhile after. On the other hand – I cant really afford to pay for 3-4 sessions a month up front, and spreading out the payments helps make it affordable.

I really wish I could buy a smaller package – as mostly I just want some training on proper form for some free-weight things (squats/dead lifts/etc).

shypht, I did the same thing a few years ago—bought into a big package and ended up paying for it long after the sessions were over. Right now I am torn. Like you, I think what I would like the most are a few sessions to get my form ironed out for free weight exercises and maybe some help designing a routine (though I have lots of those available to me already). On the other hand, the longer package sounds interesting because it will force me to go to the gym three times a week. But it is way out of my budget at the moment, anyway.
