About Me
I live outside Reno, NV, and I have the dreaded desk job at a big casino, admin for the Security Department. It's not usually particularly stressful and sometimes it's really interesting, and my bosses are the best. But it does mean that I spend a lot of time sitting, so I've struggled with my weight for years. I've done a few of the crazy things like Atkins, but nothing ever worked long-term so now I'm trying to just balance what I eat with how much I move, and let it happen more naturally. My hobbies include travel to the tropics (when I can afford it) to scuba dive, reading, bird watching, and fly fishing. I'm learning to cook now, too. One of my dreams is to see Ireland and Scotland someday.

IrishEyes's Journal
It's not as bad as it looks -
I spent most of the past week fishing, therefore doing some mild hiking. I have no idea how far I traveled, since I didn't want to risk soaking my pedometer and didn't have access to a PC to chart my walks. Now I'm back to my runs, etc.

Tried ChiRunning
Gave the ChiRunning technique a try this morning, and although what I did was ultra-basic, it really helped. I didn't have to do intervals, just jogged steadily for about a mile, and had no pain in my foot. I wanted to go further, but my time was up and I had to go home to get ready for work. Probably shouldn't push it yet anyway... I'm hoping that as I learn and understand more about the technique I'll have that feeling regularly and will be able to start racking up some miles! I think I figured out what is wrong with my "old" running shoes, too - the arch supports are too high. They feel fine for walking, but I guess the arch support causes too much impact on the tendon when I run.

Another benefit to early-morning walks
Toward the end of my walk this morning I heard a distinctive "hooting" and followed it to find a Great Horned Owl and her slightly screechy youngster, who really wasn't much smaller than his mom. They didn't seem particularly bothered by me and hung around talking to each other until I had to head on home. Just before I reached our house they flew overhead and landed on our neighbor's roof. Beautiful!! Nice way to start the day!

Jogging in SSUs
Yesterday I did a few light light jogging intervals in my Sketchers Shape-Up walking shoes. I have very little faith in them burning more calories, but I do know that my leg muscles work differently wearing them (I was a bit sore in places after the first long walks) and they really seem to protect my heels, which with the plantars flaring up is plenty of reason to me to wear them! They aren't hard to jog in, and my foot didn't hurt. I don't want to do it too often since they're not made for jogging and might break down faster. Of course right after buying my new runners, I see that Sketchers now makes a running shoe with a similar sole configuration...

Struggling back...
I tried jumping back into this, and fell flat. I've found that entering all my food makes me crazy, so I'm focusing on only entering exercise for now while simply eating smart. I've been so busy that I've only been on the site every few days, then I play catch-up with my exercise and haven't been involved in anything else. I started working short running intervals back into my morning walks, and within two weeks of doing so the plantar fasciitis that I thought was gone is already coming back strong, so my right foot is in a bucket of ice water right now as I type. I also bought a new pair of running shoes today; the "old" ones were barely used - I didn't wear them for just walking - but maybe they're just wrong for my feet somehow. I think I'd better prep my bike too, so I have cardio options!
