Most people take the waist measurement at or below the belly button, when the natural waist is actually an inch or two above on almost everybody!
Xylitol is an artificial sweetener, technically, but it's a pretty inoffensive one. It has a relatively low glycemic index, and a TON of benefits (including better dental health, reduced inflammation, etc). The best Xylitol mints are just pressed Xylitol with some mint oil for flavoring - no other ingredients. That's the route I'd go with, especially since it's CRAZY good for your teeth.
I usually wait at least a half hour after a significant meal to work out, otherwise it's uncomfortable. If I haven't eaten in a couple of hours, I'll grab a small snack right before (so I don't crash). I'm sure there's some room for optimization and body hacking here, but I think if you do what's comfortable for you you'll be fine.
Start small, and use it as an opportunity to explore your new neighborhood! I also have the MapMyRun app on my smartphone, and being able to see my running stats really makes my OCD side happy :-)
