If you don\u2019t know the answer, go investigate \u2014 and then start planning how you\u2019ll use them, pronto.<\/p>\n<p>In a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketmenot.com\/mastercard-one-more-day-of-vacation-commercial\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ad campaign<\/a> by MasterCard, a group of children lectures us that 400 million PTO days go unused every year. One young boy comments: \u201cThat\u2019s the stupidest thing I ever heard.\u201d\u00a0Well said, kid.<\/p>\n<p>And it\u2019s true: According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glassdoor.com\/press\/glassdoor-survey-reveals-average-american-employee-takes-earned-vacationpaid-time-61-report-working-vacation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">survey by Glassdoor<\/a>, only half of Americans use all their vacation days. You\u2019ll be less likely to get sick.<br \/>\n<\/b>\u201cWorking too many weeks in a row can be very detrimental to your health,\u201d says Jeff Marksberry, MD, who works with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stress.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Institute of Stress<\/a>. Employees who fail to take needed breaks are prone to increases in the stress hormone cortisol, which <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/health\/how-hormones-affect-your-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">research shows<\/a> can weaken your immune system and possibly lead to heart problems down the road. \u201cTaking a vacation lets your body and mind recover from the constant bombardment of\u00a0stress, allowing your immune system to \u2018reboot\u2019 so you\u2019re less likely to get sick,\u201d Marksberry says<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>If your vacation is relaxing enough, you\u2019ll continue to feel blissed out for up to eight weeks afterwards<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><b>2. You\u2019ll get happier just planning your trip.<br \/>\n<\/b>If you\u2019ve spent time perusing the travel boards on Pinterest, you know that even the anticipation of planning a trip can put you in a sunnier frame of mind. A study in the journal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2837207\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>Applied Research in Quality of Life<\/i><\/a> found that people who are about to go on a vacation feel happier in the weeks leading up to their trip, compared to folks with no travel plans on the horizon. Even a long weekend might improve the economy.<br \/>\n<\/b>If you\u2019re not using your vacation days because you\u2019re on a budget, spend your time off taking long weekends \u2014 it\u2019ll do <i>everyone<\/i> some good. The <a href=\"https:\/\/traveleffect.com\/sites\/traveleffect.com\/files\/reports\/DayOffDividend_LowRes_ExecSumm.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S. Travel Association reports<\/a>\u00a0that encouraging workers to use one more day of paid leave each year could bring $73 billion more to our economy annually (because, let\u2019s face it, we all spend more when we travel more).<\/p>\n<p><b>4. You might ward off depression.<br \/>\n<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/hum.sagepub.com\/content\/62\/2\/195.abstract\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">In a study<\/a> of 887 super stressed lawyers, published in the journal <a href=\"https:\/\/hum.sagepub.com\/content\/62\/2\/195.abstract\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Human Relations<\/a>, researchers found that those who took vacations, and were active and social, experienced reduced levels of depression compared to those who spent leisure time watching TV or listening to music. \u201cQuality time should include things like being outdoors, spending time with friends and family, exercise, and some \u2018me\u2019 time,\u201d says Dr. Marksberry. Travel can make you more self-aware.<br \/>\n<\/b>Just thinking about traveling to new places may boost your creativity, according to a study from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psych.nyu.edu\/trope\/Trope_Liberman_2010.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Psychological Assocation<\/a>. Mentally picturing yourself in a foreign place and contemplating having new experiences can give you an improved sense of self-awareness, too.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cNot using these days is like giving your employer a discount on your paycheck.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><b>6. Too stressed at work to contemplate leaving it all behind? \u201cIf you set yourself up properly before vacation, you should be OK when you get <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/fitness\/no-equipment-back-exercises\/\"   title=\"back\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"529\">back<\/a>,\u201d he says. Communicate with your managers and team about what needs to be done before you take off, and set a time to get briefed on the most pressing items when you return, he suggests.<\/p>\n<p><b>7. You\u2019ll fire up your love life.<br \/>\n<\/b>Hello, vacation sex! <a href=\"https:\/\/traveleffect.com\/resources\/fact-sheets\/travel-ignites-romance-executive-summary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A U.S. Travel Association survey<\/a> found that couples that travel together are more likely to have a better sex life, enjoy more romance, and be more satisfied in their relationships. \u201cGoing away on vacation can benefit your relationship with your partner by taking you out of your everyday routine and opening yourselves up to new experiences,\u201d says Susan Krauss Whitbourne, Ph.D., Professor of Psychological and Brain Sciences at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.\u00a0. \u201cIt may even give you an opportunity to capture some of those feelings of your early time together as a couple.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em>Originally posted on December 4, 2014.
