Little do you know, the battle has only just begun. Claiming your space for <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/fitness\/high-intensity-interval-hiit-workouts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">high-intensity intervals<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/fitness\/yoga-beginners-handstand-clinic-video\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">handstands<\/a> and heavy lifts isn\u2019t easy \u2014 and during peak hours, there\u2019s a real art to <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/fitness\/crowded-gym-workout-new-year\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">getting fit in close quarters<\/a>. But on the road to slimming down, leaning out, or getting swole, are you leaving behind a trail of destruction (alongside a pool of sweat on the bench)?<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED:<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/db\/daily-burn-spartan-training-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Get Spartan Fit With Daily Burn&#8217;s New Training Program<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Trouble in Gym Land<\/h3>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;One out of every three gym-goers doesn&#8217;t wear deodorant.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nuffieldhealth.com\/sites\/default\/files\/inline\/Fitness-Etiquette-Guide-Nuffield-Health.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a survey<\/a> conducted by Nuffield Health, a U.K.-based health firm, the answer may be yes. Of the 2,000 people polled, 74 percent said fellow gym goers were guilty of bad gym etiquette, and many implicated themselves as well: 49 percent admitted to having used water bottles and towels that weren\u2019t actually theirs; 33 percent revealed they exercise without deodorant; 18 percent fessed up to working out despite coughing, sneezing and being sick; and 16 percent flat-out said they don\u2019t wash their clothes between workouts. Skeeved out? Us too.<\/p>\n<p>But don\u2019t throw in the towel just yet. In an effort to make your box, studio or sports club a friendlier, safer and all-around-more-awesome place to be, we called in some of the top trainers in the country to weigh in on proper workout decorum. While this list is by no means exhaustive, it hits on some of the deadliest sins in sweatsville. So who are the worst offenders? Health club hoarders aren&#8217;t unlike the ones you see on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aetv.com\/hoarders\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reality TV<\/a>. &#8220;They stand in the same spot in front of the mirror with a collection of dumbbells in every weight around them and <i>swear<\/i> they\u2019re using them all \u2014 while doing 10 different exercises,&#8221; says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ktM1IWOCdOQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Max Tapper<\/a>, personal trainer at Chelsea Piers Fitness. How to avoid stockpiling? \u201cMake circuits small and only take the weights you will need immediately,\u201d Tapper says.<\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/fitness\/fitness-minimalist-workout\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Busy Person\u2019s Guide to Becoming a Workout Minimalist<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The gym should be welcoming and inclusive \u2014 not a place where the few super jacked people can show off their six-packs.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>2. The Not-So-Supersetter<\/h3>\n<p>Supersetting (i.e. alternating between two or more exercises at a time) is a fantastic way to <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/fitness\/get-fit-fast\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">maximize your time<\/a>, and your burn. It\u2019s also a fantastic way to make some gy-nemies during peak lifting hours. Claiming \u201cdibs\u201d on multiple areas of the gym not only ties up two pieces of real estate at once, it forces others to wait and ask around if someone\u2019s still there. &#8220;If you&#8217;re using more than one piece of equipment, make sure you&#8217;re close to them at all times,\u201d says fitness coach JC Deen of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jcdfitness.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">JCD Fitness<\/a>. Walk away for more than 15 to 30 seconds, and most people will assume you\u2019re done, Deen says. \u201cSupersetting is a luxury, not a necessity,\u201d adds strength coach and author <a href=\"https:\/\/bretcontreras.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bret Contreras<\/a>. Bottom line: \u201cIf the gym is busy, don&#8217;t superset!\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>3. The Spoiled Brat<\/h3>\n<p>Blame growing up with nannies, butlers and maids. For some, cleaning up after themselves isn\u2019t second nature, which means stray kettlebells, plates and other gym essentials not in their proper place. \u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s pretty self-explanatory, but it sucks when you\u2019re rushing to get in a workout and you spend half the time looking for the dumbbell or <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/fitness\/medicine-ball-hiit-workout-infographic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">medicine ball<\/a> you need,\u201d says Dan Trink, C.S.C.S., strength coach and owner of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefortnyc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Fort NYC<\/a>. The Exhibitionist<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>When you\u2019re pushing through that last round of v-ups or sled sprints, distractions can be a very good thing. But people-watch at your own risk. According to Jordan Syatt, five-time world record powerlifter, strength coach and owner of <a href=\"https:\/\/syattfitness.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SyattFitness.com<\/a>, overexposure (including \u201cworking out sans underwear\u201d) is more common than you\u2019d think. \u201cI&#8217;m all for giving yourself some extra breathing room, but for your sake \u2014 and everyone around you \u2014 make sure you strap on a decent pair of undies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The same goes for shirts at certain boxes and gyms. \u201cWe have a shirts-on policy for men and women,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/fitness\/mobility-training-tips-kelly-starrett\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kelly Starrett<\/a>, coach and founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/sanfranciscocrossfit.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">San Francisco CrossFit<\/a>. \u201cAs a practical matter, it keeps people\u2019s sweat from dripping all over our gym. More importantly, the gym should be a place that feels welcoming and inclusive, and not a place the few super jacked people can show off their six-packs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nU4EJfX2aXE?start=82\" width=\"620\" height=\"349\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3>5. The Miley<\/h3>\n<p>We\u2019re just minding our own business at the pull-up bar, and in comes the wrecking ball \u2014 music blaring from their over-ear headphones, singing full-voice for all to hear. Is it Miley, just being Miley? Unlikely. \u201cSinging in the gym it is not only distracting to gym members, it\u2019s flat-out annoying!\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michellelovitt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Michelle Lovitt<\/a>, celebrity trainer and fitness expert. \u201cSing in your head or in the shower so the only person you\u2019re distracting is yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>6. The Pick-Up Artist<\/h3>\n<p>Want to gawk? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gotinder.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Swipe right<\/a>. For all other inquiries, keep it respectable. Leering men aren\u2019t just creepy, they\u2019re \u201cone of the biggest reasons women tell me they&#8217;re intimidated by the weight room,&#8221; says <a href=\"https:\/\/adamrosante.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Adam Rosante<\/a>, fitness and wellness coach, and author of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0804179204\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0804179204&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=lifbydai-20&amp;linkId=KG2GZJCPLPHEZUHL\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The 30-Second Body<\/a>. \u201cIf you see someone who really catches your attention, try to make eye contact at an appropriate time \u2014 not mid back squat \u2014 and smile. If she smiles back, wait until she&#8217;s done crushing it to say hello. If she blows you off, move on. You can go run <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/fitness\/high-intensity-interval-hiit-workouts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">10 minutes of intervals<\/a> to alleviate the sting.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>7. The Talker<\/h3>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;A typical gym-goer wastes up to 35 percent of each sweat session on non-fitness activities.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Up to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/health\/article-2400146\/Gym-goers-squander-30-workout-chatting-topping-water-untangling-headphones.html\">32 percent<\/a> of gym rats admit to regularly interrupting their session to chat it up with friends. Sure, that\u2019s OK for a recovery day, but most workouts should involve some amount of <i>work.<\/i> \u201cIf you\u2019re able to carry on a full conversation while on the treadmill, you aren&#8217;t doing it right!\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/health\/my-food-diary-anja-garcia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Anja Garcia<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/db\/dailyburn-365-workout-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Daily Burn<\/a> and Equinox trainer. Gossip can wait \u2014 and for the 24\/7 gabbers, cell phone calls should never take place on a moving conveyor belt (trust us). \u201cIt\u2019s important to dedicate time to yourself, your fitness and your health.&#8221; Garcia says.\u00a0Leaving distractions behind can be the difference between a phenomenal workout, and a <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/qNPhVVjnoC0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">face plant<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/fitness\/skip-the-gym-out-of-shape\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">What Happens to Your Body When You Skip the Gym<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>8. The Texter<b> \u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Emojis can\u2019t type themselves \u2014 at least not yet. And mid-workout, those minutes scouring your smart phone can really add up, taking a toll on focus, productivity and intensity (read: <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/fitness\/how-many-calories-burned-infographic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">calorie burn<\/a>). According to a survey conducted by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/health\/article-2400146\/Gym-goers-squander-30-workout-chatting-topping-water-untangling-headphones.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Harpers Fitness<\/a>, a typical gym-goer wastes up to 35 percent of each sweat session on non-fitness activities including texting, checking email and scrolling through apps. To avoid shortchanging yourself, put your mobile into airplane mode and plug back in once you have that <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/recipes\/quick-easy-protein-shake-recipes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">post-workout shake<\/a> in hand.<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jn8KwUNLdkI?rel=0\" width=\"620\" height=\"349\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3>9. The Drama Queen<\/h3>\n<p>Drop it like it\u2019s hot? That depends. If Olympic weightlifting (on an Olympic platform) is your thing, by all means, go for it. But at most commercial gyms that aren\u2019t properly equipped, dropping your weights can be deemed dangerous, disruptive and downright unnecessary. &#8220;At the end of a very heavy set [it\u2019s] sometimes unavoidable,&#8221; says Sean Hyson, C.S.C.S., Training Director for <em>Men&#8217;s Fitness<\/em> magazine and author of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/truthaboutstrengthtraining.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Truth About Strength Training<\/a>. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But if you see a guy doing it repeatedly, he&#8217;s either desperate for attention or very careless. Dropping dumbbells can damage them, as well as the floor beneath, and abruptly dropping a barbell can warp the bar, causing it to bend. Bent bars make loads unstable to lift and can cause injuries,&#8221; Hyson adds. We\u2019re all for <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/fitness\/how-to-find-one-rep-max\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lifting heavy<\/a>, but be aware of your gym\u2019s policy (Planet Fitness, we know where you stand), and avoid unleashing the beast with every. single. rep.<\/p>\n<h3>10. The Know-It-All<\/h3>\n<p>Dole out unsolicited advice and you\u2019re bound to push buttons. \u201cI see it happen a lot at various gyms I train at, and have yet to witness anyone who appreciates a total stranger giving them advice that they didn&#8217;t even ask for,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/tonygentilcore.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tony Gentilcore<\/a>, C.S.C.S., co-founder of Cressey Sports Performance in Hudson, MA.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are a million reasons why a trainer \u2014 or non-trainer \u2014 might be doing something, and presuming that you know why they&#8217;re doing it is condescending,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/jessikneeland.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jessi Kneeland<\/a>, strength coach and creator of Remodel Fitness. \u201cIf you must get involved, simply ask them why they&#8217;re doing it that way. They may be clueless and actually ask for help \u2014 in which case go for it! The Body Double<\/h3>\n<p>Imitation can be the sincerest form of flattery, unless of course that involves attempting a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/fitness\/crossfit-annie-thorisdottir-interview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">375-pound deadlift<\/a>\u00a0having never learned proper form. A \u201cmonkey see, monkey do\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/fitness\/fitness-goals-workout-resolutions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">deadlift<\/a> (or any other exercise you may find poorly executed on YouTube) won\u2019t be deadly, but it can result in a strained muscle, herniated disc, or worse. &#8220;It\u2019s a recipe for disaster,\u201d says\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/TotalAthleticPT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jason D\u2019Amelio<\/a>, certified athletic trainer and owner of Total Athletic PT. It&#8217;s also one that can land you on YouTube yourself, but as a #gymfail. \u201cRead up on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/fitness\/best-strength-training-exercises\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new exercises<\/a>\u00a0before attempting to execute them, and make sure you have\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/fitness\/muscle-imbalances-functional-movement-screen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">good form<\/a>\u00a0and technique before you start adding weight,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_-91_iXATY8?start=54\" width=\"620\" height=\"349\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3>12. The Grunter<b> \u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>There\u2019s beast mode, and then there\u2019s <i>beast<\/i> mode. If you\u2019re performing a <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/fitness\/how-to-find-one-rep-max\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">near-max set<\/a>, grunting is an acceptable practice that\u2019s often impossible to control, Hyson says. \u201cIt&#8217;s a byproduct of the pressure that builds up in the abdomen from <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/fitness\/breathing-techniques-strength-training\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">holding your breath<\/a> during a lift.\u201d Research suggests it may also be the result of proper breathing, which can reinforce stability in the core to help generate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/early-lead\/wp\/2014\/09\/04\/grunting-leads-to-better-tennis-says-science\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">more power<\/a>. It\u2019s when those grunts begin to resemble wounded animal noises that there may be a problem. D\u2019Amelio adds, \u201cIf you\u2019re using 10-pound dumbbells for bicep curls and it&#8217;s a struggle to lift them properly without making a prehistoric sound, consider dropping to a lighter weight where you can perform the exercise with full range of motion and full control.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/fitness\/breathing-techniques-strength-training\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3 Breathing Techniques for a More Effective Workout<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>13. The Liability<\/h3>\n<p>Take a note from Bret Contreras\u2019s list of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bretcontreras.com\/50-commandments-commercial-gym-etiquette\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">50 Commandments of Commercial Gym Etiquette<\/a>, and repeat after us: \u201cThou shalt respect other\u00a0individuals\u2019 space and maintain adequate distance from other\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/fitness\/most-important-strength-exercises\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lifters<\/a>\u00a0while they\u2019re lifting.\u201d Getting too close for comfort is not only irritating; it can result in a dropped weight, a black eye, or worse. It\u2019s possible the same person has been causing trouble for other clients as well, and it may be time to intervene.<\/p>\n<h3>15. The Sweaty Betty (and Stinky Steve)<\/h3>\n<p>Sweat can be the mark of hard work, but don\u2019t let it stain your reputation. You may be a prime target for pushy trainers\u00a0trying to score new business. According to a poll conducted by Nuffield Health, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nuffieldhealth.com\/sites\/default\/files\/inline\/Fitness-Etiquette-Guide-Nuffield-Health.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">45 percent<\/a> of trainers said they don\u2019t think people seek out enough professional help. Whether or not they\u2019re right, that\u2019s up to you to decide. If it\u2019s not <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/fitness\/never-skip-leg-day\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">leg day<\/a>, steer clear of such hallowed ground.\u00a0\u201cEveryone says curls, but taking up a rack for shrugs is worse,\u201d says Trink. Take them to the Smith machine instead, he suggests. And for <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/fitness\/how-to-build-muscle-fast-pick-weights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bicep curls<\/a>, all you need is a preacher bar or a <a href=\"https:\/\/store.dailyburn.com\/collections\/equipment?partner=life&amp;mtype=5&amp;sub_id=%20gymetiquette-1&amp;utm_source=cnn&amp;utm_medium=textlink&amp;utm_campaign=10142014&amp;utm_content=gymetiquette-dumbbells-middle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">set of dumbbells<\/a> and a clear spot on the gym floor, says JC Deen.<\/p>\n<h3>19. The Lemme-Get-a-Spot Bro<\/h3>\n<p>Needy significant others often get the boot. And yet, it\u2019s hard to say no to the dude who always needs a spot. (Safety first, right?) Keep in mind that not every lift should be a <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/fitness\/how-to-find-one-rep-max\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one-rep max attempt<\/a>, and other lifters <i>do <\/i>have their own programs to tend to. \u201dThe only exercises that really need to be spotted are chest press and fly variations and squats,\u201d says Hyson. \u201cOnly in rare situations is a spotter really necessary to help you increase the intensity on a set \u2014 by helping you force out more repetitions, or changing weights for you during a drop set.
