Meet the Nordic Diet, which emphasizes packing your <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/health\/eating-healthy-on-a-budget\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">grocery list<\/a> chock-full of foods inspired by the cultures of Norway, Sweden and Denmark.<\/p>\n<p>Think of the Nordic Diet as a successor to the wildly popular Mediterranean diet \u2014 just coming from a different part of the world. \u201cA healthy Nordic diet\u2026is about the same as the Mediterranean diet on the nutrient level, but of course the selection of food is different,\u201d says Dr. Matti Uusitupa, MD, PhD, and former leader of the Nordic Center of Excellence\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nordforsk.org\/en\/programmes\/projects\/ncoe-sysdiet-systems-biology-in-controlled-dietary-interventions-and-cohort-studies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SYSDIET Project<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Intrigued by the thought of looking as good as the Nordic people do? (After all, supermodel Nina Agdal hails from Denmark\u2026) Here\u2019s how to start eating like a Viking\u00a0\u2014\u00a0and reaping the health benefits of this crazy good-for-you plan, too.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>How to Eat the Nordic Diet Way<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Let\u2019s get one thing clear: The Nordic Diet is <em>nothing<\/em> if not hearty. Its delicious and filling meals are built around a variety of fatty fishes, like herring and salmon, says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.karenansel.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Karen Ansel<\/a>, MS, RDN, and co-author of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/The-Calendar-Diet-Losing-Weight\/dp\/0615576192\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Calendar Diet: A Month By Month Guide to Losing Weight While Living Your Life<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And don\u2019t worry, <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/recipes\/healthy-pork-turkey-beef-recipes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">meat lovers<\/a>. You won\u2019t be required to give up your favorite staple. Just substitute fattier choices, like ground beef, for lean red meat, like bison, according to Uusitupa. And when it comes to fruits and veggies, you can plan to stock your crisper with berries, root vegetables, such as carrots and beets, cruciferous options such as cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower, and green leafy choices like spinach, says Ansel.<\/p>\n<p>Best of all, the Nordic Diet focuses on foods with tons of <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/health\/news-how-much-protein-020515\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">protein<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/health\/how-much-fiber-high-fiber-foods\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fiber<\/a>, both of which are necessary for keeping you full from meal to meal. \u201cThe Nordic diet is satisfying. It\u2019s based on whole foods that are in season, so its foods are filling and taste better because they\u2019re at their peak,\u201d says Ansel.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The Health Benefits of Going Nordic<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Start parsing through all the health perks of eating the Nordic way, and you may wonder why you\u2019ve never heard of this diet before. \u201cOne of the biggest benefits of the Nordic Diet is better <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/fitness\/heart-rate-training\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">heart health<\/a>,\u201d says Ansel.<\/p>\n<p>In a 166-person study in the <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/joim.12044\/abstract\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Journal of Internal Medicine<\/em><\/a>, researchers asked 96 participants to follow a healthy Nordic Diet and 70 to eat normally. By the end of the 18 to 24 week trial, the dieting participants showed significant health improvements<em>. <\/em>\u201cWe have shown that the Nordic Diet results in lower risk of cardiovascular diseases,\u201d says Uusitupa, one of the study authors, \u201cIt decreases [the ratio of] LDL-cholesterol to HDL-cholesterol \u2014 that\u2019s \u2018bad\u2019 cholesterol to \u2018good\u2019 cholesterol and lowers blood pressure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/health\/ldl-hdl-cholesterol-facts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Why Young People Need to Worry About Cholesterol, Too<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Another study in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24257725\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Journal of Clinical Nutrition<\/em><\/a> suggests that the Nordic Diet can actually affect genes involved with low-grade inflammation. \u201cIn that study, the Nordic diet decreased values of some inflammatory markers,\u201d says Uusitupa.
