While Barrett wanted to lose weight and drop about two sizes from her frame, Allison was underweight and bloated, after subjecting herself to an extreme raw foods diet.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/health\/healthy-weight-loss-goals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">5 Tips for Setting a Totally Doable Weight Loss Goal<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019d been on all the hard diets, all the <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/health\/eating-clay-health-trend-or-natural-cleanse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fad diets<\/a>, we\u2019d tried everything and in the end our health was definitely lacking. We were just so done,\u201d says Barrett. The sisters began searching for a new solution\u00a0\u2014\u00a0and after exhaustive research, they finally landed on something that worked. \u201cAs soon as we found a sane and simple approach we were like, \u2018Yee-haw, grandma!\u2019 We had to tell the world,\u201d Allison recalls.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The Basics of the Trim Healthy Mama Plan<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>If you\u2019ve fallen prey to diets advising you to shun carbs, fat or sugar entirely, you\u2019ll be happy to know that on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1101902639\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=1101902639&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=lifbydai-20&amp;linkId=S5T253VCQTRZ7P4O\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Trim Healthy Mama Plan<\/em><\/a>, no food groups are banned. The concept is fairly simple. You\u2019re allowed to eat <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/health\/protein-sources-infographic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">protein,<\/a> veggies, <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/health\/carb-diets-101\/\">carbs<\/a> and fat\u00a0\u2014 as long as you avoid eating both carbs <em>and <\/em>fat in the same meal. \u201cWhen you\u2019re going to do <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/health\/carbohydrates-pre-post-workout-carbs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">healthy carbs<\/a>, pull back the fats,\u201d Barrett says, \u201cOr when you\u2019re going to do healthy fats, pull back the carbs. Then, when you stick it out, weight loss naturally happens.\u201d Though neither Barrett nor Allison have a formal background in nutrition, they say their plan can balance your blood sugar levels, help you learn how to manage your calorie intake and naturally enable your body to burn more fat.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe\u2019re about celebrating food. We just do it in a way that\u2019s kind to our hips.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The sisters experimented on themselves and discovered that their approach helped Barrett lose her unwanted pounds \u2014 while giving Allison a new approach to healthy eating that was sustainable and nutritious. In 2012, they self-published the original 640-page <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0988775115\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0988775115&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=lifbydai-20&amp;linkId=NZ7CII2H63WPNEWW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Trim Healthy Mama<\/em><\/a> book. Part of the reason the diet works might just be the gentle approach it takes to eating. \u201cMy advice is give yourself lots of grace. Don\u2019t expect to be perfect on the first day; it\u2019s going to take you a few weeks,\u201d Barrett says.<\/p>\n<p>Barrett and Allison encourage the occasional indulgence, and say the plan is doable whether you\u2019re a home chef and <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/health\/vegan-diet-plan-questions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">food purist<\/a>, as Allison describes herself, or for those who occasionally succumb to the lure of the <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/recipes\/healthy-homemade-french-fries-recipes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">drive-through window<\/a>, like Barrett. While the book isn\u2019t packed with scientific studies backing the diet\u2019s efficacy, their mission is clear: smart, sustainable food choices, aka everything in moderation. \u201cWe\u2019re about celebrating food. We just do it in a way that\u2019s kind to our hips,\u201d Barrett says.<\/p>\n<p>Though both women are indeed mamas, they say that the plan isn\u2019t meant exclusively for mothers. \u201cThis is a plan for people who stink at diets,\u201d Allison says. \u201cIf you pick up this book and think \u2018I stink at diets,\u2019 this is a plan you cannot fail on \u2014\u00a0because you\u2019re allowed
