That\u2019s why literally <em>millions <\/em>of dollars are being spent each year to encourage people to move more with initiatives like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.letsmove.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Let&#8217;s Move<\/a>. But now, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/pub_releases\/2015-10\/uopa-snc100615.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new study<\/a> from the University of Pennsylvania has pinpointed the one thing that might actually improve your <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/fitness\/365-easy-burpee-modification\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">workout habits<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It turns out the secret to keeping up lies in having a posse of \u201chealth buddies.\u201d (It may<em> sound<\/em> corny, but hear us out.) When researchers asked 217 students to enroll in free exercise classes at their gym, they gave half of the subjects a virtual support system comprised of six of their peers. The other half either received <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/fitness\/workout-motivation-beyond-perfect-body\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">motivational messages<\/a> via e-mail to pump them up for workouts, or just the free membership.<\/p>\n<h3>Strength in Numbers<\/h3>\n<p>Throughout the 13-week study, each member regular received e-mail updates on their peers\u2019 actions, though everyone\u2019s identity was kept anonymous. When one person signed up for a <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/fitness\/dailyburn-yoga-made-simple-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">yoga<\/a> or strength-training class, the other folks were notified. And they got updates only on the good stuff \u2014 not when one of them skipped a class to <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/health\/healthy-pizza-calories-hack\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">eat pizza<\/a>, instead. (Because hey, that definitely happens.)<\/p>\n<p>Results showed that students paired with \u201chealth buddies\u201d were the only ones who showed a steady increase in workout attendance (rah-rah messaging and freebie classes alone didn\u2019t do much). \u201cYou just have to put people into the right kind of social environment where they can interact with each other. Even anonymous social interaction will create <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/fitness\/fall-in-love-with-fitness-4-steps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">behavior change<\/a>,\u201d says study author Damon Centola, of Penn\u2019s Annenberg School for Communication and its School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.<\/p>\n<p>The crazy thing, though, is that the subjects involved in the study didn\u2019t even know each other. So imagine what could happen if you formed a workout group of your <em>actual <\/em>friends?
