If the answer is cereal \u2014 or a <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/health\/sugar-worse-than-salt-your-heart-121014\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bottle of soda<\/a> \u2014 you could be adding to your waistline.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/thesalt\/2015\/05\/18\/403364557\/how-we-store-food-at-home-could-be-linked-to-how-much-we-eat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new study<\/a> shows that what kind of food you have laying around could be correlated to your weight. To investigate, the researchers photographed 240 kitchens in Syracuse, New York and found that women who had a box cereal out on their counters weighed 20 pounds<em> more<\/em> than those who didn\u2019t have boxes of the <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/recipes\/whole-grain-breakfast-recipes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">breakfast staple<\/a> sitting out. Even crazier: Those with <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/health\/news-diet-soda-belly-fat-031915\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">soda<\/a> on display weighed 24 to 26 pounds more than those with clear surfaces.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/health\/how-to-lose-belly-fat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Truth About How to Lose Belly Fat<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s your basic See-Food Diet \u2014 you eat what you see,&#8221; said lead study author Brian Wansink, professor and director of the Cornell Food and Brand lab and author of <em>Slim by Design: Mindless Eating Solutions for Everyday Life<\/em>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/pub_releases\/2015-10\/cfb-t2l101615.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in a press release<\/a> of the results. &#8220;As a cereal lover, that shocked me. Cereal has a <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/health\/sugar-bad-for-you-health-effects\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">health-halo<\/a>, but if you eat a handful every time you walk by, it&#8217;s not going to make you skinny,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>But don\u2019t worry about stashing everything away. People who had a fruit bowl on their countertop weighed about 13 pounds <em>less<\/em> than their neighbors with no apples or oranges in sight. Moral of the story: Time to rearrange your kitchen, stat. Put the Cheerios\u00a0away (so you\u2019ll take it out only at breakfast time) and set out a bowl of <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/recipes\/healthy-apple-recipes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ripe, juicy apples<\/a>, instead.
