In fact, adult coloring books are all the rage right now. And while researchers and art therapists alike have touted the calming\u00a0benefits for over a decade, it\u2019s childhood favorite Crayola that\u2019s gotten adult coloring books some serious grown-up attention. The famous crayon makers just launched a set of markers, colored pencils and a collection of adult coloring books, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B015KNCSLA\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B015KNCSLA&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=lifbydai-20&amp;linkId=M57WXUNC5AOWSXNZ\" target=\"_blank\">Coloring Escapes<\/a><\/em>, last month. And though\u00a0the first commercially successful adult coloring books were\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/business\/currency\/why-adults-are-buying-coloring-books-for-themselves\" target=\"_blank\">published<\/a>\u00a0in 2012 and 2013<i>,<\/i>\u00a0the\u00a0once-niche hobby has now grown into a full-on trend, with everyone from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/health-shots\/2014\/01\/07\/260470831\/mindfulness-meditation-can-help-relieve-anxiety-and-depression\" target=\"_blank\">researchers at Johns Hopkins University<\/a> to the editors of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yogajournal.com\/meditation\/find-inner-child-meditation-coloring\/\" target=\"_blank\">Yoga Journal<\/a><\/em> suggesting coloring as an alternative to meditation. Here&#8217;s why you might want to open a\u00a0page and\u00a0say <em>ahhhhhh<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/lifestyle\/mental-health-day-benefits\/\" target=\"_blank\">Why You Need to Take a Mental Health Day Now<\/a><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Art Therapy, Adult Coloring Books and Your Mental Health<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>According to the <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arttherapy.org\/upload\/whatisarttherapy.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">American Art Therapy Association<\/a><\/u>, art therapy\u00a0is a mental health profession in which the process of making and creating artwork is used to \u201cexplore feelings, reconcile emotional conflicts, foster self-awareness, manage behavior and addictions, develop social skills, improve reality orientation, reduce anxiety and increase self-esteem.\u201d So basically, it\u2019s similar to good old therapy. Yet art therapy is not only about learning and improving yourself \u2014 it\u2019s a means of personal expression, too.<\/p>\n<p>However, it is important to note that using an adult coloring book is not exactly the same as completing an art therapy session. &#8220;Coloring itself cannot be called art therapy because art therapy relies on the relationship between the client and the therapist,&#8221; says Marygrace Berberian, a certified art therapist and the Clinical Assistant Professor and Program Coordinator for the <a href=\"https:\/\/steinhardt.nyu.edu\/art\/therapy\/\" target=\"_blank\">Graduate Art Therapy Program at NYU<\/a>. And while art therapy was first practiced in the 1940s, the first research on using coloring as therapy is generally believed to have only begun as recently the mid 90s, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/files.eric.ed.gov\/fulltext\/EJ688443.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Art Therapy: Journal of the American Art Therapy Association<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/lifestyle\/digital-online-therapy\/\" target=\"_blank\">Feeling Anxious or Sad? Why E-Therapy Might Help<\/a><\/p>\n<h3><strong>The Health Benefits of Adult Coloring Books<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Despite the fact that coloring and art therapy aren\u2019t quite the same thing, coloring does offer a slew of mental benefits. &#8220;Coloring definitely has therapeutic potential to reduce anxiety, create focus or bring [about] more mindfulness,&#8221; says Berberian. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/news\/ct-adult-coloring-books-met-20151129-story.html\" target=\"_blank\">Groundbreaking research<\/a> in 2005 proved anxiety levels dropped when subjects colored mandalas, which are round frames with geometric patterns inside. It can be particularly effective for people who aren&#8217;t comfortable with more creatively expressive forms of art, says Berberian, &#8220;My experience has been that those participants who are more guarded find a lot of tranquility in coloring an image.
