Though you might think hours of training could justify a diet of pizza, pasta and <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/recipes\/protein-healthy-cookie-recipes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cookies galore<\/a>, that\u2019s not quite the case for <em>every<\/em> athlete out there. (But kudos to you, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.wsj.com\/health\/2008\/08\/13\/the-michael-phelps-diet-dont-try-it-at-home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Michael Phelps<\/a>.) Case in point: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/ebeisel34\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Elizabeth Beisel<\/a>, two-time Olympic medalist and contender for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, who takes the concept of fueling for fitness to a whole new level.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDiet is huge because I\u2019m basically <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/health\/pre-workout-fuel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fueling to train<\/a> right now and I\u2019m training very, very rigorously,\u201d Beisel says. By that, she means that on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, she\u2019s spending five hours in the pool \u2014 plus another hour of dry-land training full of crunches, pull-ups (her most hated exercise) and other bodyweight moves.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/fitness\/april-ross-olympics-beach-volleyball-workout\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Train Like an Olympian: Beach Volleyball Player April Ross<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In between pool workouts, Beisel fills her Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays with solo runs or classes at her local <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/fitness\/orangetheory-fitness-hiit-heart-rate-training\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Orangetheory Fitness<\/a>. Then, Sunday is a rest day \u2014 which for Beisel often means a short run, followed by yoga. \u201cIt\u2019s definitely a lot of working out but and that\u2019s what you need to do if you want to be the best, so I\u2019m willing to do that,\u201d Beisel, age 23, says.<\/p>\n<p>While she used to be able to get away with eating whatever she wanted, Beisel says she\u2019s definitely seen changes in her body since attending her first Olympics at age 15. \u201cBack then my <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/health\/metabolism-myths-weight-loss\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">metabolism<\/a> was as fast as a guy\u2019s and I could eat whatever,\u201d she recalls. \u201cBut over the past year, my body is totally changing and my metabolism is a lot slower.\u201d As a result, she\u2019s had to clean up her diet. \u201cI\u2019m trying to cut the bad <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/health\/ewg-food-scores-food-calculator\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">processed sugars<\/a> \u2014&nbsp;they taste great, but are they really going to help my swimming and help my performance?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/health\/my-food-diary-anja-garcia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">My Food Diary: What This Super-Fit Trainer Eats in a Day<\/a><\/p>\n<p>We took a peek inside her daily schedule to find out what this Olympic swimmer eats in a day.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>What Olympic Swimmer Elizabeth Beisel Eats<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_26493\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26493\" style=\"width: 620px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-26493\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-life.dailyburn.com\/life\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/10051435\/Mango-Blueberry-Smoothie_PS_2.jpg\" alt=\"Mango Blueberry Smoothie\" width=\"620\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn-life.dailyburn.com\/life\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/10051435\/Mango-Blueberry-Smoothie_PS_2.jpg 620w, https:\/\/cdn-life.dailyburn.com\/life\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/10051435\/Mango-Blueberry-Smoothie_PS_2-300x193.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-26493\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by Perry Santanachote<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Breakfast<br \/>\n<\/strong>Before hitting up her 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. swim practice, Beisel fuels with a <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/recipes\/protein-smoothie-recipes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">smoothie<\/a>. \u201cA lot of swimmers don\u2019t like to eat a lot before they get in the water because it doesn\u2019t feel right in your stomach, and I\u2019m one of those people,\u201d she says. \u201cI drink a smoothie about 30 minutes before.\u201d She\u2019ll blend a cup of blueberries, a cup of soy milk and a scoop of <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/health\/how-to-use-protein-powder\/\"   title=\"protein powder\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"65\">protein powder<\/a> for a quick 200 to 300 calories to hold her over until the end of practice.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_40331\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-40331\" style=\"width: 620px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-40331 size-full\" title=\"Orange Kale Green Smoothie Recipe\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-life.dailyburn.com\/life\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/10041721\/Orange-Kale-Green-Smoothie_PS_2.jpg\" alt=\"Orange Kale Green Smoothie Recipe\" width=\"620\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn-life.dailyburn.com\/life\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/10041721\/Orange-Kale-Green-Smoothie_PS_2.jpg 620w, https:\/\/cdn-life.dailyburn.com\/life\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/10041721\/Orange-Kale-Green-Smoothie_PS_2-300x194.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-40331\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by Perry Santanachote<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Post-Workout Snack<br \/>\n<\/strong>Two hours later, Beisel is ready for her post-practice meal. She\u2019ll typically make an <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/recipes\/unexpected-omelet-recipes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">omelet<\/a> and another <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/recipes\/healthy-green-smoothie-recipes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">smoothie packed with greens<\/a>, including spinach, kale, pineapple and Greek yogurt. After she\u2019s wrapped up her session, she\u2019ll refuel by grabbing a chocolate milk (there\u2019s a stash at the gym where she trains) or <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/recipes\/dessert-inspired-protein-shake-recipes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">protein shake<\/a> to aid in muscle recovery.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_47807\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-47807\" style=\"width: 620px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-47807 size-full\" title=\"Salmon Dinner Elizabeth Beisel\" src=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Beisel-Dinner.jpg\" alt=\"Salmon Dinner Elizabeth Beisel\" width=\"620\" height=\"400\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-47807\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by Elizabeth Beisel<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Dinner<br \/>\n<\/strong>Dinner is served up about an hour-and-a-half after practice ends. \u201cI\u2019ll almost always have huge salad with greens, chickpeas, edamame, strawberry, green apples, avocado, and then I\u2019ll normally cook up some quinoa and a piece of salmon or chicken,\u201d Beisel says. \u201cThat will be the last time I\u2019ll eat for the day. I\u2019m not really into the <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/health\/healthy-late-night-snacks-eating-at-night\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">late-night eating<\/a> because I know it\u2019s not good for you,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>How\u2019s that for some <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/recipes\/clean-eating-meal-plan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">clean eating<\/a>?&nbsp;Knowing the Summer Games in Rio will probably be her last Olympics, Beisel is leaving nothing on the table (pun intended). \u201cThis is probably my last go-around, so I\u2019m going to do everything in my power so that when I\u2019m behind the blocks, I won\u2019t have any regrets whether I win or lose,\u201d Beisel says. \u201cI\u2019ll know I did the best I could and that\u2019s the mindset I have in every practice and that\u2019s what keeps me motivated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>To learn more about all the Olympic hopefuls, visit <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teamusa.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>teamusa.org<\/em><\/a><em>.
