But don\u2019t subscribe for another round of a <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/health\/juice-cleanse-debate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">juice cleanse<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/health\/teatoxes-juice-cleanses-weight-loss-detox\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">teatox<\/a> just yet (<a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/health\/teatoxes-juice-cleanses-weight-loss-detox\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">catch the scoop on those here<\/a>). There\u2019s a hot new sip in town \u2014 soup.<\/p>\n<p>The traditional cozy comfort food and <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/health\/immune-system-foods-colds-flu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cold cure-all<\/a> has moved into the wellness spotlight as the latest weight loss and detox darling. \u201cIt\u2019s juicing to the next level. You rely on soup as your meals for the day,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nutritioulicious.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jessica Fishman Levinson<\/a>, RDN and culinary nutrition expert.<\/p>\n<p>Ready to swap your straw for a spoon? Here\u2019s Your 5-Day Plan<\/a><\/p>\n<h3><strong>What\u2019s Healthier: Souping or Juicing?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>While souping uses some of the same fresh ingredients you\u2019ll find in your favorite juices, there\u2019s one major difference \u2014 fiber. Instead of extruding fruit and vegetables through a press (and removing the fiber along the way), soup typically consists of pureed whole foods.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cOne of the downsides of juicing is it can be high in sugar.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>These superfood-packed soups often include more than just fruits and vegetables, too. \u201cWith souping, you\u2019re getting more fiber because the soups can have beans and grains in them. They can have protein. You\u2019re not just getting liquid calories,\u201d says Levinson. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/kategeagan.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kate Geagan<\/a>, RD and author of <em>Go Green Get Lean<\/em>, that extra fiber can slow digestion and absorption, which may fight hunger longer than a juice. Think of it as a souped-up <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/recipes\/easy-smoothie-recipes-infographic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">smoothie<\/a> for breakfast, lunch and dinner.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/health\/sugar-detox-diet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">How to Do a Sugar Detox (Without Going Crazy)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Souping] is also a tasty, convenient, readily-approachable way to include many of the foods we know we should be eating more of \u2014 but that we struggle with, like vegetables, fruit and legumes,\u201d Geagan says. The wider range of ingredients also means <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/health\/sugar-detox-diet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">less sugar<\/a>. \u201cOne of the downsides of juicing is it can be high in sugar. Even if it\u2019s natural sugar, it can make your blood sugar go up quickly,\u201d says Levinson. \u201cSouping can be lower in sugar [than juicing] because of the other foods.\u201d Plus, there are some ingredients, like tomatoes, where the nutrients are more accessible when cooked. \u201cLet\u2019s say you had a tomato-based soup. You can get the lypocene from the tomato more efficiently than from raw tomato juice,\u201d says Levinson.<\/p>\n<p>And, souping up may help you avoid the <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/health\/hangry-hunger-anger-skipping-meals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hangry rants<\/a> commonly associated with juice cleanses. \u201cPeople get it that they should have more in their diet than just juice but they still want something that\u2019s quick and easy,\u201d says Levinson. \u201cSoup can be filling if it has the right components.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/health\/hangry-hunger-anger-skipping-meals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Science Behind Why You&#8217;re Hangry<\/a><\/p>\n<h3><strong>A Better Way to Detox?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>But does the higher fiber and lower sugar mean that souping is the better way to detox?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA single drink, juice or soup isn\u2019t going to \u2018detox\u2019 you any more than a single unhealthy meal is going to make you <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/health\/pros-and-cons-cheat-day-diet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gain weight<\/a>. It\u2019s the daily choices that really add-up,\u201d says Geagan. \u201cSupporting your body\u2019s best chemistry is an ongoing process of good nutrition, sleep, hydration and exercise. The liver is the human body\u2019s great detoxification organ, and good nutrition supports the liver and helps it function at its best.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite the benefits souping offers over juicing, Levinson is also weary of recommending it as a sole diet plan or weight loss tool. \u201cAnytime you\u2019re on a <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/health\/low-calorie-foods-feel-full\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lower calorie diet<\/a>, you\u2019ll lose weight,\u201d she says. And from the ones the RD has seen, souping plans run approximately 1,200 calories a day. \u201cThat\u2019s really not enough for most people. And it\u2019s not sustainable because you have the deprivation factor,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/health\/losing-weight-loss-secrets-success-stories\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">12 Things Nobody Told Me About Losing Weight<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Plus, you lose some of the joy of food when you sip a soup. \u201cIt\u2019s not like sitting down to a plate of <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/recipes\/healthy-salmon-recipes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">salmon and sweet potatoes<\/a> and broccoli where you taste the different flavors and you feel the different textures of food on your tongue,\u201d says Levinson. \u201cThere\u2019s a psychological benefit to using all of your senses when you eat and you can lose that when you\u2019re just drinking.\u201d While a hot soup might slow you down a beat, a liquid diet still tends to go down faster. \u201cYou\u2019re not being as <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/health\/mindful-eating-tips-weight-loss\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mindful<\/a> when you\u2019re eating and drinking your soup quickly,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>While souping may be a step up from juicing, you still want to proceed with caution. It can be a good addition to your <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/health\/carb-cycling-meal-plan\/\"   title=\"meal plan\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"29\">meal plan<\/a> (especially if you\u2019re looking for a convenient and portable way to down your veggies), but you may want to rethink a diet based only on soup. \u201cI think it\u2019s another one of those trends that\u2019s hot right now and going to phase out,\u201d says Levinson.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If your last juice cleanse left you seriously hangry, souping might be a more manageable way to detox.
