And based on its many health benefits, you might start adding it to your cooking repertoire, too.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Algae oil is a nutrient dense powerhouse due to its high concentration of <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/health\/omega-6-omega-3-foods\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">omega-3 fatty acids<\/a>,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/ffactor.com\/meet-dietitians\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Shana Pantirer<\/a>, RDN, senior registered dietitian at F-Factor Nutrition. \u201cThese fatty acids are essential to our diets because our bodies cannot manufacture them,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n<p>While you may be weary of the oil&#8217;s fishy factor (after all, the thought of algae doesn\u2019t exactly induce food FOMO), Kelly LeVeque, a holistic nutritionist and founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/bewellbykelly.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Be Well By Kelly<\/a>, says it\u2019s virtually tasteless. &#8220;If I had to compare it, I would say that it tastes similar to vegetable oil,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p>But is it worth dipping your spoon into this new cooking craze?<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/health\/best-healthiest-cooking-oil-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Here\u2019s Which Cooking Oil to Use (And When)<\/a><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Hold Up, Algae Oil? <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A little back-story: The algae is first grown in a fermenter, where it feeds on plant sugars, and then is pressed to release the oil from the walls of the algae cells. \u201cAlgae oil is made specifically from micro algae,\u201d Pantirer explains. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thrivealgae.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Thrive Culinary Algae Oil<\/a>, one of the main suppliers of bottled algae oil, ferments it in a sterile environment (like how you would with beer or wine) before it\u2019s dried and pressed, for example.<\/p>\n<p>But most impressively, the oil is a great source of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), an omega-3 fatty acid that your body needs for <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/lifestyle\/exercise-benefits-brain-function\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">healthy brain function<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/health\/ldl-hdl-cholesterol-facts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">optimal heart health<\/a>, among other things. In one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18589030\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recent study<\/a> from the National Center for Biotechnology Information, researchers found that algae oil capsules have the same amount of DHA as a piece of cooked <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/recipes\/miso-glazed-salmon-recipe-snap-peas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">salmon<\/a>. This makes algae oil a great option for <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/health\/vegan-diet-plan-questions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vegans<\/a> and people who are fish-averse or allergic to sea creatures. Plus, algae oil has twice the amount of omega-3s than <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/recipes\/chia-seed-recipes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">chia seeds<\/a>, nine times more fiber than <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/recipes\/orange-kale-green-juice-recipe-protein\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">kale<\/a>, and twice more protein than spinach, LeVeque adds.<\/p>\n<p>Its reputation has caused a plethora of brands to fortify their products with the oil in drinks, supplements, food and even baby formula for a nutritional boost. Chefs have also taken a liking to its high (485<strong>\u00b0<\/strong>F) smoke point (the temperature that oil stops simmering and starts to burn), which makes cooking easier and cuts <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/fitness\/no-equipment-back-exercises\/\"   title=\"back\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"698\">back<\/a> on fat and calories.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/health\/oil-pulling-explained\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Oil Pulling: Miracle Cure or Oily Mess?<\/a><\/p>\n<h3><strong>More Than Just a Cooking Oil<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cWhen algae is consumed as oil, the monounsaturated omega-3 rich fatty acids help stabilize blood sugar, balance <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/health\/why-am-i-so-hungry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hunger hormones<\/a> and help your body fight inflammation,\u201d says LeVeque.<\/p>\n<p>A study in the <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/ejn.12406\/abstract\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">European Journal of Neuroscience<\/a> shows that oil containing DHA may help quell <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/lifestyle\/stressed-gifs-breathing-exercises\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">symptoms of anxiety<\/a> and depression, in addition to anti-depression and anti-anxiety medication.<\/p>\n<p>But the list of nutritional benefits goes beyond the DHA content. \u201cAlgae oil also contains marine minerals such as iodine, which is important for thyroid health, <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/health\/magnesium-deficiency-symptoms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">magnesium<\/a>, potassium and even calcium,\u201d says Pantirer.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Should You Stock Up Now?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>When it comes to the battle of the oils, is there really a reason to choose algae oil over its coconut shelf-mate? Yes, Pantirer says. \u201cAlgae oil has a higher abundance of monounsaturated fatty acids and less saturated fat than coconut oil.\u201d But because algae oil is new, more research is still needed on its benefits and how it compares to other oils.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In terms of health benefits, algae oil is giving coconut oil and extra-virgin olive oil a run for their money.
