With this way of eating, your body operates from the fat you consume, and as a result, you also easily burn fat.<\/p>\n<p>According to Dr. Adam Nally, a board-certified obesity medicine physician, ketogenic expert and author of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Keto-Cure-Dietary-Solution-Optimize\/dp\/1628601299\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Keto Cure<\/em><\/a>, the ketogenic diet also helps reduce insulin overproduction \u2014 a common symptom of the American diet. Insulin overproduction can increase the likelihood of developing other chronic diseases, like <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/health\/sugar-bad-for-you-health-effects\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">diabetes<\/a> and metabolic syndrome.<\/p>\n<h2>What Causes the Keto Flu?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Dr. Nally says that the body&#8217;s levels of insulin and <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/health\/salt-sodium-recommendations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">salt<\/a> are related. &#8220;What happens when you switch into ketosis, [is that] your insulin level has reduced, and the need to retain salt has been reduced,&#8221; he explains. Therefore, your body rapidly expels excess salt. If your body loses too much salt (and other electrolytes, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/health\/gut-health-essential-nutrients-better-sleep\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">potassium<\/a>), you can start to feel flu-like symptoms including fatigue, headaches, brain fog, dizziness, nausea, irritability, lightheadedness and <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/fitness\/muscle-cramps-causes-treatment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">leg cramps<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Another potential cause of fatigue, says Dr. Nally, is not consuming enough <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/health\/eat-healthy-fat-less-sugar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fat<\/a> when on a ketogenic diet. &#8220;Because we&#8217;ve created a fat phobia, some people just aren\u2019t adding back enough fat.&#8221; Protein is generally used by the body to maintain muscles, skin, hair and nails, says Dr. Nally, whereas carbs are usually used for energy. But if you\u2019re not consuming enough salt and potassium, it can prolong keto flu symptoms. If simply salting your food a little more doesn&#8217;t provide relief, try increasing electrolyte intake through <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/recipes\/homemade-sports-drink-recipes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sports drinks<\/a>. &#8220;Often by just adding some <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/health\/beginners-guide-bone-broth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bone broth<\/a> or bouillon broth, symptoms will improve in minutes,&#8221; says Dr. Nally.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, you&#8217;ll also want to make sure you&#8217;re consuming enough calories overall and that your calorie intake includes enough fat. Simply <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/health\/dehydration-symptoms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stay hydrated<\/a> and keep your electrolytes up.<\/p>\n<p>But if your headaches don\u2019t get better, and you continue to vomit or feel weakness and fatigue, it\u2019s time to see your MD. People with diabetes who use the ketogenic diet to moderate blood sugar may want to test their ketone levels, in addition to blood sugar, to make sure they aren\u2019t at risk for developing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/type-2-diabetes-ketogenic-diet#risks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">diabetic ketoacidosis<\/a>.
